The Kyolic Garlic & Aerobic Fitness Trial
Arterial stiffness is a cardiovascular risk factor, which increases naturally with age. Kyolic garlic has been shown to improve the flexibility of arteries, and slows down blood flow, which may improve oxygen uptake, associated with aerobic fitness.

“Always prioritise the patient over the establishment. ”
— A guiding principle from Professor Avni Sali AM, often hailed as the ‘founding father of integrative medicine’ in Australia.
In 2008, with unwavering support from the community and business sectors passionate about Integrative Medicine, The National Institute of Integrative Medicine set its roots at a once dilapidated Victorian nursing home at 759 Burwood Rd, Hawthorn East. Under the careful supervision of Steve & Phil Bunce, this property underwent a transformative renovation, fuelled primarily by dedicated volunteers and generous donations.
In 2009, Professor Sali’s dream turned into reality when Mayor of Boroondara, Councillor Jack Wegman, alongside NIIM benefactor and friend Anne Kantor and Founding Chair Grant Moffitt, officiated its opening. Notably, patrons like Peter Copulos, Robert Kirby, Beverley Pinder, Betty Zervas, Ian Brighthope and several others have been with NIIM from these early days and continue their support.
In 2011, with the support of the Bardas Foundation, NIIM opened its Hyperthermia Unit to treat people with cancer.
The Institute quickly outgrew its initial premises, prompting a search for a new space by 2013. By 2014, NIIM was re-located to a spacious four-story premises at 11-23 Burwood Road, Hawthorn, setting up Professor Sali’s vision for further expansion.
Central to NIIM are its three pillars:
2011: Prof Sali, co-authored with Dr Vicki Kotsirilos & Prof Luis Vitetta ‘A Guide to Evidence-Based Integrative and Complementary Medicine.’
In 2012, the NIIM Research Department was opened under the leadership of A/Prof Karin Ried. It celebrated its 10 Year Anniversary in 2022. Research Studies have included:
Prof Sali received an integrative medicine award in recognition of more than 20 years of service at the Australian College of Nutritional & Environmental Medicine (ACNEM) 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner & Awards.
In 2016 Australia recognised Prof Sali’s immense contribution by bestowing upon him the Order of Australia for “significant service to integrative medicine as an educator, clinician and researcher, and to professional education”.
The same year witnessed the launch of ‘Visionary Man –Visionary Medicine’ by Lindy Schneider, spotlighting Prof Sali’s ground-breaking work as a pioneer of Integrative Medicine, his challenges and achievements in his quest for the new future of medicine.
NIIM stands tall as Australia’s premier Integrative Health institute, offering a blend of traditional and complementary medical practices. With its accredited clinic, a stocked dispensary, and a research department that’s collaborated with global partners, the Institute shapes the future of healthcare. NIIM’s educational efforts, both in-person and virtual, reach global audiences, ensuring clinicians stay ahead of the curve.
As we stand on the shoulders of our generous donors, it’s worth noting that our research and education work are supported by this community. It is this unwavering commitment to NIIM that fuels NIIM’s mission to make integrative medicine the norm.
“One day, integrative medicine will be mainstream medicine. This is the paradigm shift Australians deserve.”
— Prof Avni Sali, Founder & Director, National Institute of Integrative Medicine.
